| Ante |
General poker term referring to a small bet that everyone makes to start a game.
Texas Holdem uses a "blind" bet system that allows for more strategy using your positional advantage.
"Up the ante" is a common english phrase borrowed from Poker that means to increase the stakes.
|
| Backdoor |
To make an unexpected good hand from the last 2 cards(turn and river) after the flop.
|
| Bad beat |
To lose a good hand to a lucky draw.
|
| Blind bet |
Texas Holdem version of Ante. Two Blind bets are made each time a new
game is started. The big Blind and the small Blind. The 2 players immediately to the left
of the dealer make this bet to start the pot. Since the dealer position rotates around the table
for each deal, everyone eventually has to make the blind bet. All the other players then have
an option to fold, check, bet, call, or raise.
|
| Bluff |
To raise as if you have a good hand hoping that the opponents fold.
|
| Boat |
Same as a Full House. A hand consisting of 3 of a kind and a pair.
Beats a Flush Straight and 3 of a Kind.
|
| Board |
The 5 community cards on the table. "Playing the Board" means that your best
hand consists of the cards already on the board. You can still win this way if everyone else
folds, or you could split the pot if no one else has anything better.
|
| Call |
To stay in the game by matching the last bet.
|
| Check |
To stay in the game without making a bet. This option exists only if no one
else has increased the stake.
|
| Community |
The cards on the table shared by everyone.
|
| Fifth Street |
The last card drawn onto the board also called the "River". When this
last card makes your flush, your opponents will cry a "river" of tears.
|
| Flop |
The initial 3 community cards
|
| Flush |
5 cards of the same suit.
Beats a pair, 2 pair, 3 of a kind, and straights. Loses to a full house.
|
| Fold |
To give up any interest in the pot and lose what ever bet you have put in so far.
The advantage of position to the Texas Holdem player is that if everybody "Checks" you can also
hang around long enough to see if the flop looks promising, even if you have a weak pair.
|
| Full house |
3 of a kind with a pair.
|
| Heads up |
A game that has only 2 players active.
|
| Jackpot |
A separate prize for special events like best bad beat highest hand of the day etc..
|
| Kicker |
A card that is not part of the winning combination but can be used as a tie
breaker when 2 players have the same type of winners. For ex.. 2 players both have 77QQ.
77QQK will beat 77QQJ. The kickers are K and J.
|
| Limit |
Games can be played with either a set limit to the amount any player
can bet per round, or in the case of "No Limit" a player can bet everything in one game.
|
| Muck |
To throw your cards away and give up without showing them.
|
| Nuts |
A hand that cannot be beat. For ex.. if the board shows 2 Aces and you are holding
the other 2, and there is no possibiliy of a straight flush, you are "holding the nuts".
|
| Pair |
Two cards of the same rank.
|
| Pocket |
The 2 cards each Texas Holdem player receives from the dealer to start the game.
|
| Position |
The position of a player relative to the current dealer. The significance of
good position is the luxury of knowing what everyone else has done before you commit to a bet.
|
| Quads |
4 of a kind.
|
| Raise |
Increase the stake when someone else has bet. Same as a bet except that you are
raising someone elses bet. Your other option to a bet is to "Call" the bet with an equal amount or "Fold".
|
| River |
The last (5th) community card drawn to the board.
|
| Royal |
The highest hand in poker which no one ever sees. Straight flush Ace high.
10-J-Q-K-A
|
| Showdown |
The final action of a round when the winner is determined by showing the cards.
|
| Side Pot |
An extra pot created when someone is "all in"(bet everything they have) and therfore cannot participate in
any more betting but can still win the amound in the original pot they contributed to before they ran dry. This allows the game
to continue and the pot distributed fairly. It is generally a disadvantage to play with a small amount that could cause you to go "all in"
because you can only win a fraction of the pot even if you have a good hand.
|
| Trips |
Trip(lets)..3 of a kind.
